About Chess Lab

We provide structured and engaging coaching for players of all abilities, from complete beginners learning the fundamentals to advanced players looking to take their game further.

Lessons focus on developing tactical awareness, strategic understanding, calculation and confidence through a combination of instruction, puzzles and practical play.

About James

Chess Lab is led by James Hartley, a chess master who has represented Australia at the U18 World Youth Chess Championship.

James is also the winner of the 2024 Melbourne International Open (Major) and coaches students across primary and secondary schools.

You may also see him coaching at Box Hill Chess Club.

He works with players from beginners through to advanced level, adapting lessons to suit each student's experience and ability.

James' coaching approach is centred around making chess both challenging and enjoyable, helping students understand the game more deeply while continuing to build confidence and improve.

Our Approach

Every student develops differently, so Chess Lab lessons are designed around the ability of the individual or group.

Beginners build strong foundations and learn good decision-making habits, while more experienced players develop deeper tactical, positional and strategic understanding.

Whether a student is learning chess for the first time or looking to become a stronger tournament player, the goal remains to learn, play and improve.
